Reading the Connections Page: Who Is Eating Your Bandwidth

Published · Updated · 2 min read

Speeds dropped, or your subscription quota is draining faster than it should. Don't guess — open the Connections page. It lists every live connection: destination host, bytes up and down, which proxy chain it took, and which rule it matched.

Sort by traffic first

Click the Download column header. The bandwidth hogs float straight to the top. The usual surprises:

  • Cloud storage and sync clients running incremental uploads in the background;
  • Video sites pre-buffering — a tab you left open is still pulling stream data;
  • System updates. In TUN mode Windows Update goes through the proxy too, see TUN mode.

The Chain and Rule columns

Chain shows the proxy group and node the traffic actually took; Rule shows which line in your config it matched. Together they answer the most common question there is: why isn't this site using the node I picked? If the Rule column isn't the line you expected, it's almost always ordering — something broader above it matched first. See rule providers.

Closing an individual connection

Each row can be closed from the right-hand side. Old connections do not drop when you switch nodes — once a TCP connection is established it stays bound to the original node, which is why the switch often seems to change nothing. Close the relevant rows and the client reconnects through the new node. Group behaviour is covered in proxy groups.

Note

A few hundred open connections is normal — one browser tab can open dozens. What deserves attention is an unfamiliar process repeatedly dialling the same domain.
